IMPORTANT! RMS Data corruption possible from Windows XP Service Pack 3 and Vista Service Pack 1

https://mbs.microsoft.com/partnersource/support/selfsupport/hottopics/rms_xp_sp3_vista_sp1_compatibility.htm?printpage=false

Compatibility issue in Microsoft Dynamics RMS after Windows XP Service Pack 3 or Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is installed (Updated 5/14/08): May Cause Data Loss

Last Modified 5/16/2008Posted 4/22/2008
Microsoft has identified a compatibility issue that occurs after Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) or Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) is installed on a Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS) computer. This compatibility issue may cause data loss in Microsoft Dynamics RMS databases.

Overview
Windows XP SP3 and Windows Vista SP1 include a change to the handling of database records that include information from more than one table. For example, a supplier record in Microsoft Dynamics RMS includes information from both the Supplier and Item tables. In more technical terms, Identity field values are not reflected in record sets after installation of the service pack. This may cause data loss in Microsoft Dynamics RMS databases that may not be apparent to the user.

Details
Symptoms
These are some of the issues we are currently aware of that you may experience in Microsoft Dynamics RMS after you install Windows XP SP3 or Windows Vista SP1:
Inability to process Headquarters worksheets
Inability to create a supplier with associated items
Inability to create associations with Matrix, Lot Matrix, and Assembly items
Inability to add a quantity discount to an item
Application crash when you try to create Lot Matrix items
Application crash when you try to create a customer who has one or more shipping addresses

User Impact
All Microsoft Dynamics RMS users who have installed Windows XP SP3 or Windows Vista SP1 will be affected. Note While this issue extends to Windows Server 2008, that is not a supported operating system for Microsoft Dynamics RMS.

Resolution
Supported Windows Vista and Windows XP updates are now available from Microsoft that will prevent these issues from occurring. For more information about these updates and how to download them, visit the following Microsoft Web site:http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=952287

Notes:
Applying this update will not fix any data damage that has occurred before applying the update
If you use Windows XP you must have Windows XP SP2 or Windows XP SP3 installed on the computer before you apply the update.
The Windows XP update information is located toward the bottom of the Knowledge Base article.
If you use Windows Vista you must have Windows Vista SP1 installed on the computer before you apply the update.

REDMOND, Wash. — Dec. 17, 2007
The new version of Microsoft Dynamics CRM, formerly code-named “Titan,” has been completed and released to manufacturing, Microsoft Corp. announced today. Designed with a single unified-code base for both on-premise and on-demand deployments, Microsoft Dynamics CRM enables customers to choose the right deployment model for their specific business and IT needs, with the flexibility to change deployment models over time if their needs or preferences change.

“Microsoft Dynamics CRM is making the power of choice a reality for businesses around the world,” said Brad Wilson, general manager of Microsoft Dynamics CRM at Microsoft. “This new release further enables us to deliver on Microsoft’s software plus services strategy and provide our CRM solutions with a great user experience and exceptional business value.”
Some of the significant new benefits and capabilities of this new release include these:

The new release of Microsoft Dynamics CRM has been in extensive use over the past year by more than 600 partners around the world and more than 100 early access customers representing a broad range of on-premise, partner-hosted and Microsoft-hosted deployments.
“Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 meets our needs for an enterprise-ready CRM solution,” said Dirk Karl, general manager and chief procurement officer at ING Group, a financial institution that offers banking, insurance and asset management services to clients in 50 countries. “It will allow us to easily automate innovative workflows, quickly share knowledge across our global enterprise, and develop a more productive worldwide purchasing and vendor relationship management environment.”

Microsoft Launches SaaS Push with Dynamics CRM 4.0 Release

Microsoft Launches SaaS Push with Dynamics CRM 4.0 Release

Microsoft CRM 4.0 should be hitting the shelves -- virtual or otherwise -- by year’s end. The product, aka Titan, released to manufacturing on Dec. 14.

Many observers characterize this version, formally known as Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 as the flagship offering for Microsoft's software-plus-services strategy in that the same code base underlies the on-premise, partner-hosted and Microsoft-hosted implementations.

"This is a true Software as a Service platform now and will change the way Microsoft addresses the market," said Andy Vabulas, CEO of IBIS Inc., an Atlanta-based Microsoft Gold partner. IBIS plans to host and sell on-premise installations, he said.

John Hendrickson, CEO of InterDyn Business Microvar, said this iteration will help Microsoft and its partners compete more effectively with Salesforce.com's hosted CRM product. "We like the 'live' and hosted scenarios because they give us more options to talk to customers about. I can do any of these although I expect the vast majority of customers will still opt for on-premise," Hendrickson noted.

The Microsoft-hosted option will be known by the "Live" moniker that covers the Windows Live and Office Live services offerings. While the partner-hosted and on-premise versions should be available for download by the end of this week, the Microsoft-hosted CRM version will be broadly available in the first half of next year. Early access customers have been testing out that software for some months now.

With CRM 4.0, the company hopes to prove that it can play a major role in the SaaS revolution pioneered by Salesforce.com, Webex and Google.

Microsoft's stance has been that it must deliver features and functions in the way most palatable to customers. It has remained publicly mum, however, on when and if it will launch a Microsoft-hosted ERP solution along the lines of NetSuite's service. Company executives have told partner sources in the past that Microsoft-hosted ERP will happen. Partners can already host the company's ERP lines.
